EXCELLENCE IN PAIN PRACTICE (EPP) AWARD

TO A PAIN CENTRE

 

BACKGROUND AND GUIDELINES

 

CONCEPT

With the success of WIP’s mission in promoting the highest standards of pain practice globally, WIP introduces a program of recognition to award Pain Centers a certificate of Excellence in Pain Practice.

 

MISSION

To create a process by which the applications are received and evaluated, and to bestow the award pain centers with the highest ethical standards.

 

OBJECTIVE AND AIM

To define and recognize the excellence of pain centers. These pain centers will be recognized for their level of excellence in education and training of young fellows and physicians in the field of pain practice.

                                               

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

The application for the award is sent voluntarily, for consideration, by a pain center, which is directed by a FIPP certificate holder.

 

PROCEDURE FOR SOLICITING APPLICATIONS

  1. How is the material evaluated for eligibility?

            Due diligence of the application is conducted by WIP staff.

 

  1. Who receives this application for consideration?

Excellence in Pain Practice Award Committee after due diligence is performed by the WIP Secretariat who receives the application.

 

PROCEDURE FOR EVALUATION OF APPLICATION

When the application is received for the Excellence in Pain Practice Award, the WIP Secretariat verifies the completeness of the following materials and signs off on each prior to sending the application materials to the Chair and the members of EPP Awards Committee.

 

  1. The application is complete and signed off by the Secretariat.
  2. All supporting documents are enclosed and complete and are signed off by the Secretariat.
  3. The completed application is forwarded by the Secretariat to the EPP committee Chair and members.
  4. Incomplete applications are reported to the Chair with a description of the action being taken to complete the application.

 

PROCEDURE FOR SELECTION OF THE AWARD BY THE EPP AWARDS COMMITTEE

  1. The Chair and the members of the committee acknowledge receipt of the application and the date received.
  2. All committee members will utilize a grading system for evaluation of the application and send their comments for acceptance/rejection to the Chair within 30 days of receiving the application.
  3. The Chairman will review the majority decision from the committee members and then informs the Executive Board of the final outcome of the application. If votes are equal then the chairman has final one extra vote.
  4. The committee will initially determine the eligibility of the Pain Center, based on the documents received.
  5. If satisfactory, the committee will nominate a qualified WIP member to make arrangements with the said Pain Center to physically inspect the site and activities of the applicant.
  6. Appropriate notice will be given by both parties for the inspection date.
  7. A checklist will be created for the inspector to follow and complete during the inspection of the pain center.
  8. The inspector, who will be chosen from within the WIP Section of the applying Pain Center whenever possible, will be reimbursed by the applying Pain Center for the cost of a two-day visit, including economy class airfare, two nights’ hotel accommodation, and per diem expenses. Total travel expenses of the regional inspector are estimated to be between $500-$1,000, and shall not exceed $1,000.
  9. The member would complete the checklist of his inspection and submit the documentation with his recommendation to the Chair of the Task Force Committee.
  10. The Task Force Committee would make a final decision as to whether the Pain Center should be approved for the award. This information will be communicated to the President of WIP if the Pain Center is approved for the award.
  11. If the Pain Center is deficient in certain criteria for approval of this award, the committee Chair will communicate this to the Pain Center applicant for further action.
  12. The President of WIP will send a formal letter to the Pain Center congratulating them for their successful application.
  13. The award will be valid for five years after acceptance and the Pain Center will need to apply for renewal.
  14. The WIP Secretariat will prepare a standardized letter for either acceptance or rejection of each application on behalf of the President, who informs the applicant of the outcome.
  15. The awards are valid for five years
  16. Pain Centers that receive this award will be obliged to pay a $1,000 certification fee to WIP for each five-year period.

 

PROCEDURE FOR AWARD CEREMONY

  1. Award recipients are acknowledged in all official WIP publications, print and electronic media, including but not limited to newsletter, website, and Congress bulletins.
  2. Award recipients are recognized in a special ceremony at the next World Congress.
  3. Award will consist of wall plaque and a certificate with the WIP logo

 

RECORD KEEPING

  1. All accepted applications are archived indefinitely.
  2. All rejected applications are retained for five years and discarded if no subsequent action is initiated.

 

DISSEMINATION OF THE EPP AWARD TO THE PUBLIC

  1. Advertise the award recipients in the WIP newsletter and Pain Practice journal.
  2. Advertise the award recipients on the WIP website.
  3. Recognize the award recipients at the World Congress.
  4. Pain Centers recognized for providing patients with service excellence under the Excellence in Pain Practice (EPP) Award program are not recommendations or endorsements of any facility or practitioner for a particular purpose, but are based on specific criteria and inspection of the center’s practice. A patient's decision about where to seek medical care should take into consideration factors beyond those reflected in this program, and should be made in consultation with the patient's healthcare provider.
